  4. By the way, to explain the last post, I sent an email to the legitimate president of Uchida Rokakuho to inquire into the validity of the solicitation email and his note (i.e.,the last post) is what I got back. I suggested he contact Japanese law enforcement.

  7. What is the purpose of the e-mail scam?

  8. What they do is send you a check to deposit into your attorney trust account and then ask you to wire out "settlement monies" to the other company. The check they send is fraudulent, but many times the bank doesn't catch it before it's too late and you have already wired $ out of your account. BEWARE!!!

  9. Slight variation, now apparently moving from publishing.
The name and company are completely legitimate, but do a little checking and you find the name & address at the bottom of the letter exactly the same as you can find in some corporate directories. The "in your jurisdiction" was pretty vague (flag #1). They list the guy as the President (which he is) but the phone number given appears to just be the general number for the company (flag #2). Then you wonder why there's no logo given (flag #3). Then you wonder why the President is sending email from a yahoo acct rather than @companyname.com (flag #4).

Finally I typed in the only-slightly-offbeat wording of the email into Google and came across your Web site. Thanks for hosting this. I'll obscure the real guy's name and company, but it was an industrial company in Japan. FYI here's the email I got today:

We have Intellectual Property agreement matter in your jurisdiction.
Please advise us on your standard retainer fee so that we can forward
you the agreement for your review and run a conflict check.

    Yours Sincerely
    XXXXX XXXXXX (President)
